The following will provide information to help you in this process: WHO NEEDS A BUILDING PERMIT? The State of New York and the Town of Benton requires permits for a variety of items. A few examples would be:
If you have any questions on whether you need a building permit, contact the code enforcement department. Building permits for all structures will require a site plan. New homes will require a stamped set of plans, as will some additions and renovations. Special Use Permits, Area and Use Variances have specific requirements; please contact the Code Enforcement Department for this information. The Town of Benton recently adopted a new Sub-Division law into our zoning. Please contact our zoning officer for proper procedure if you are planning to sub-divide or split any properties. Some of these include the windmills, subdivision, farm waste management and of late the Marcellus shale natural gas drilling controversy. All of these issues will impact the quality of life the citizens of Benton now enjoy. Therefore, the Planning Board is spending time reviewing laws in place and educating themselves on new subjects to provide better protection for the town and its people. The board is more than willing to listen to your concerns and constructive ideas.
